Hair Loss Risk Calculator
Answer 8 quick questions about your genetics, age, and lifestyle to get a personalised risk score — free, no sign-up, results in under a minute.
This is an educational estimate based on known risk factors, not a diagnosis. See our full diagnostic quiz for a more detailed, pattern-specific read.
How this hair loss risk calculator works
This calculator produces a weighted risk score from eight factors with genuine, documented links to hair loss likelihood: family history on both sides, your age, any signs you've already noticed, stress levels, smoking, and diet pattern. Each factor is weighted roughly in proportion to how strongly it's associated with hair loss risk based on the research covered throughout our guides — family history and existing visible signs carry the most weight, since they're the strongest predictors; lifestyle factors like stress, smoking, and diet contribute more modestly, since they're more often triggers for temporary shedding or contributing factors than primary causes on their own.
Why family history matters so much
Genetic pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) is polygenic, meaning it's influenced by multiple genes inherited from both parents — not, as commonly believed, solely from the mother's side. This is why the calculator asks about both your father's and mother's side separately, and why both contribute meaningfully to your score. See our complete hair loss guide for the full breakdown of genetic versus non-genetic causes, and our hair loss in your 20s guide if age is a significant part of your concern.
What a "high risk" score does and doesn't mean
A higher score reflects a statistically stronger likelihood of experiencing pattern hair loss at some point — it is not a diagnosis, and it doesn't mean hair loss is inevitable or already happening. Genetics loads the gun, but the timeline and severity still vary enormously between individuals with similar risk profiles. Equally, a lower score doesn't guarantee you'll never experience hair loss — it simply reflects that, based on the factors this tool measures, your statistical likelihood is lower than someone with more risk factors present.
What to do with a high-risk result
If your score came back moderate-to-high, the most useful next step isn't panic — it's awareness and a plan. Early treatment with minoxidil, and a conversation with a doctor about finasteride if you're male, tends to preserve meaningfully more hair than waiting until loss is already advanced (see our treatment comparison guide). Taking a baseline photo now, in good lighting, gives you something concrete to compare against in six months — far more reliable than relying on memory or day-to-day impression.
Limitations of this tool
This calculator cannot examine your scalp, measure follicle miniaturisation, or rule out non-genetic causes like thyroid conditions or nutritional deficiencies — all of which can also affect hair and aren't fully captured by a lifestyle questionnaire. It's a screening and awareness tool, not a diagnostic one. For a more detailed, pattern-specific read on what's actually happening with your hair right now (rather than your future statistical risk), try our full diagnostic quiz, or see a dermatologist for a proper in-person assessment — our guide to choosing one can help with that step.
Frequently asked questions
Q: Can this calculator tell me if I'm already going bald?
A: No — it estimates future risk based on known factors, not your current hair status. Use our stage self-assessment tool or diagnostic quiz to understand what's happening right now.
Q: Is a low score a guarantee I won't experience hair loss?
A: No. It reflects lower statistical risk based on the factors measured, not a guarantee — some hair loss causes (illness, medication side effects, stress) can affect anyone regardless of baseline genetic risk.
Q: Should women use this calculator too?
A: Yes — the tool adjusts scoring for biological sex, since female pattern hair loss progresses differently (see our female pattern hair loss guide) and visible progression to advanced stages is less common at an equivalent risk-factor level.
